Maybe it's the warm smile you remember most, or special treats prepared just for you. Did you play games, learn to knit, snack on milk and cookies, or snuggle up and read stories together? If you were lucky enough to grow up with a Grandma, chances are your childhood memories of visiting her house are among your fondest. That's why the classic M.I. Hummel figurine, Going to Grandma's, tugs at the heartstrings in a very special way. The figurine has been a favorite since it was modeled by Master Sculptor Reinhold Unger in 1936. The figurine depicts not only the excitement of the girls as they set off for Grandma's but the typically Bavarian tradition of bringing gifts when visiting. Going to Grandma's has undergone some transformations through the years. Older figurines were produced with a rectangular base, which was changed to oval when the small figurine was restyled in the early 1960s, and when the large figurine was restyled in 1979. The contents of the candy-filled cone (Zuckerte) have undergone slight variations. And the girls in older figurines have painted petticoats, while in newer models, the underskirt area is left a glazed white. In its last year as an Open Edition, Going to Grandma's will bear a Final Issue Medallion and Backstamp to mark its special status. Then, on December 31, 2004, the molds will be broken and the figurine will never again be produced at the Goebel factory. So if you'd like to add this nostalgic favorite to your collection, visit your retailer soon. By the way, Going to Grandma's makes a perfect gift for a special grandchild in your life. What a wonderful way to preserve the memories of all those happy visits!
